This Sunday I’ll talk about another “little pearl” that I discovered through Netgalley. From huge fan of sci-fi I could not miss this book came out in February of the writer Julia Crane. It ’s the first of the series IFICS (you will discover by reading it the meaning of this “acronym”) and the author has confirmed to me on her facebook that she is writing the sequel.
This book is available in English only.
I received this book thanks to NetGalley and Indie Inked in exchange for an honest opinion.
When seventeen-year-old Kaitlyn checked the box, she never suspected she’d have her life–and her body–stolen from her. She awakens one day in a secret laboratory to discover that her body is now half-robot and is forced to hide her own secret: that she still has human emotions and a human mind. If the scientists who made her find out, they’ll erase what remains of who she was.
Kaitlyn finds an unlikely ally in Lucas, a handsome, brilliant scientist who can’t get over the guilt he feels knowing she was once a vibrant, beautiful young woman. He never expected a science project to affect him the way she does. As he tries to help her rediscover her past, he finds himself falling for the brave girl struggling to find her place and acceptance between the human and computer worlds.

The story begins in medias res, when Kaitlyn already has undergone operations that turned half robot and she is recovering gradually. She is a beautiful girl who attracts attention of scientists and soldiers working in the complex dell’IFICS. About the incident, that took her life, she does not remember anything except brief flashes, but the signs are in her body. Only her beautiful face and gray eyes remained intact. Her life, if you can call it, is a series of tests and upgrades, which Professor Adams and Lucas, the charming dark-haired genius with sensual lips, undergo her.
The young woman has a big secret that only her friend, Quess, knows: she feels emotions and interventions have not been able to tear apart her humanity. But there are so many things that she still has to find out: who she was before she died, and what will happen to her. To answer these questions she will need an unexpected ally, who has turned her almost into a cyborg, Lucas.
It’s always pretty clear the reason for her transformation by the eccentric billionaire Dr. Harrington, while surprised me a little the personality of this man. Besides the main characters, I greatly appreciated the young “investigator” Quess, the only friend of Kaitlyn, and even the most faithful.
Of course, the book is well written and the characters are all well defined, but I would have preferred a different ending. I can not wait to know how to continue and especially how the characters that have been entered at the end of the book will affect the plot of the next.
If you love science fiction such as “The Sarah Connor Chronicles”, and cyborg with human feelings, this book is definitely for you.
Small confession: I figured Kaitlyn as Summer Glau! I love her!
Other confession: I’m in love with this image at the end of each chapter.
