Un mese fa ho avuto la fortuna di essere tra i 500 fortunati vincitori di una short story di Beth Revis, “The Girl & The Machine” che fa parte di una collezione di racconti dell’autrice sci-fi dal nome “The Future Collection”. Oggi ho finalmente avuto il tempo di leggerla e ringrazio ancora tantissimo l’autrice per aver ricevuto questo bellissimo regalo!

Heather laughed, but there was no amusement in the sound. “I suppose it’s not every day someone meets a time traveler.”
A boy meets a girl. This is what always happens, or not?
Maybe it happens to everybody, except to Franklin and Heather, respectively a time traveler and the woman he met in her past, his future. For him, that young woman with honey-colored eyes and dark skin is a stranger, a temptation of a future he didn’t lived so far. In fact, although he is a time traveler, Franklin can only travel in his past and never in the future. And Heather seems to have have known him for a long time, she knows a lot of things about him, and she talks about a way to go beyond those limits, and to change the world together. And, finally, there’s the Machine, but what is its real purpose?
Franklin immediately reminds me of Tim, the protagonist of “About Time”, since both of them have the same gift, travel back in their timeline with some limitations. However, as little by little we know him, we find out his traveling through time isn’t harmless like Tim’s one. He took advantage of time travel for his career, and, above all, for himself. Now, yet, as Heather put pressure on him, because she knows him such as a different person, he appears to think there’s a better future for him, maybe as an hero.
I’m not going to say a lot about Heather, just three things: I really liked her (although I found her too young for some things); her role is central, as the title suggests; and of course she is linked to the Machine.
Time travels, as opposed to what you can expect, are narrated by the protagonist and become a source of reflection for his actions.
The ending provides an unexpected turn and add a much darker tone to the story. A choice that I liked, but after all very brave, because not everyone loves these sudden twists of the situation.
I recommend this short story with an interesting plot, mysterious characters and time travel as a background, to all sci-fi fans.

Un ragazzo incontra una ragazza. Non è così che va sempre?
Forse per tante persone al mondo, ma non per Franklin e Heather, rispettivamente viaggiatore nel tempo e la donna che lui ha incontrato nel passato di lei, ma suo futuro. Per lui, quella giovane donna dagli occhi di miele e la pelle scura è ancora una sconosciuta, una tentazione di un futuro che ancora non ha potuto vivere. Infatti, sebbene sia un viaggiatore nel tempo, Franklin può solo andare nel suo passato e mai andare nel futuro. E Heather sembra conoscerlo da tempo, sa molte cose su di lui, e parla di un modo per superare quei limiti, per cambiare il mondo insieme. Ed infine c’è la Macchina, ma a cosa servirà davvero?
Franklin mi ha ricordato immediatamente Tim, il personaggio del film “Questione di Tempo”, dato che entrambi hanno lo stesso dono di poter viaggiare nel tempo con numerose limitazioni. Eppure, mano a mano che lo conosciamo, si scopre che il suo viaggiare nel tempo è molto meno innocuo di quello di Tim. Ha sfruttato al massimo i viaggi per quella che è la sua professione, ma soprattutto per sé stesso. Ora, però, messo alle strette dall’affascinante Heather, che lo conosce come un’altra persona, sembra quasi pensare che per lui ci sia un futuro migliore, da eroe.
Di Heather non dirò molto, solo tre cose: mi è piaciuta molto come figura femminile (nonostante l’abbia trovata forse troppo giovane per certe cose); il suo ruolo è centrale, come lascia intendere il titolo; e ovviamente ha a che fare con la Macchina.
I viaggi nel tempo, a differenza da quanto ci si può aspettare, sono più raccontati dal protagonista che effettivamente presenti nella vicenda, e diventano motivo di spunto a posteriori per le sue azioni.
Il finale prevede una svolta inaspettata e aggiunge un tono molto più dark alla vicenda. Una scelta che ho apprezzato, ma molto coraggiosa tutto sommato, perché non tutti amano questi capovolgimenti improvvisi della situazione.
Consiglio questa short story con una trama interessante, personaggi misteriosi e i viaggi nel tempo come sfondo, a tutti gli appassionati del genere.
