Sono un po’ indietro con le recensioni, soprattutto di alcuni libri che ho letto a fine anno scorso e questo è proprio uno di quelli. Sapete già che seguo la serie della Kiera Cass da tempo e sono abbastanza curiosa di vedere come la trilogia si trasformerà con l’aggiunta dei nuovi libri annunciati. Mentre il quarto, “The Heir” (dalla copertina favolosa!), uscirà a Maggio di quest’anno sia in inglese che in italiano, questa novella prequel di cui vi parlerò oggi è uscita a Dicembre in formato ebook e ancora non è disponibile in italiano. La serie, insomma, continua e per capire come è strutturata vi rimando allo schema più sotto nella scheda del libro.
I’m a little behind with reviews, especially of some books I read at the end of last year and this is just one of those. You already know that I follow the series of Kiera Cass long for a long time and I’m quite curious to see how the trilogy will be transformed with the addition of new books announced. While the fourth, “The Heir” (with a fabulous cover!), will be released in May this year in both english and in italian, this prequel novella about which I will talk today was released in December in ebook format, and is still not available in italian. The series, in short, continues and to understand how it is structured, I refer you to the scheme below.

Per questa volta Kiera Cass non ci porta in avanti, ma torna alle origini, per raccontarci della Selezione che ha preceduto quella di America e di come la regina Amberly è riuscita a spuntarla sulle altre contendenti. Sappiamo già che il percorso per essere la perfetta pretendente al trono è molto difficile, che la sfida è quasi all’ultimo sangue, ma con Amberly affrontiamo un percorso decisamente diverso.
Mi piaceva il personaggio della regina Amberly nella serie principale, ma qui non sono riuscita ad apprezzarla. Forse il mio ‘lato femminista’ e il fatto di conoscere la storia futura ha influito, però non ho visto che una ragazza giovane, affascinata dal principe che ha ‘amato’ da quando aveva sette anni e totalmente succube di lui. La relazione con Clarkson sin dagli inizi è quanto di più lontano da una storia d’amore si possa immaginare. Sarà un principe, avrà una famiglia che ha problemi, ma Clarkson rimane un personaggio odioso, interessato più al suo essere sottomessa che a lei come persona. E per Amberly tutto questo è fantastico (ma perché?!) e anzi inizia a ‘combattere’ per lui subito dopo che sembra mostrare interesse nei suoi confronti.

A fine lettura mi sono persino chiesta se la povera Amberly non fosse rimasta vittima di una sorta di sindrome di Stoccolma. Va bene non rendersi conto che non riuscirà mai a cambiare il futuro re di Illèa, ma arrivare ad amare una persona che ti tratta come una bambola vivente, no. Amberly, purtroppo, non fa nulla per evitare che gli altri la trattino in quel modo, anzi si colpevolizza per ciò che c’è di ‘sbagliato’ in lei.
Sono rimasta davvero delusa da questa Amberly giovane e ho riconfermato il mio parere negativo sul suo futuro marito Clarkson. Non so neanche che mi aspettassi in realtà dalla loro relazione, probabilmente speravo che lui fosse peggiorato col tempo, o che ci fosse stato un po’ di vero amore tra loro. Di certo la loro relazione è completamente diversa da quella di Maxon e America.
L’unica nota positiva della novella è lo stile della Cass che trovo sempre scorrevole e piacevole, per cui ho deciso di aggiungere una goccia in più.
“The Queen” è una novella che aggiunge altri dettagli inediti all’universo creato da Kiera Cass, consigliata in particolare ai fans della serie The Selection.

This time Kiera Cass does not take us forward, but back to basics, to tell the Selection that preceded that of America and as our beloved Queen Amberly won over the other contenders. We already know that the path to be the perfect pretender to the throne is very difficult, the challenge is almost to the death, but with Amberly we face a decidedly different path.
I liked Queen Amberly character in the main series, but here I was not able to appreciate it. Maybe my ‘feminist side’ and the fact of knowing the future history has influenced me, but I did not see more than a young girl, fascinated by the prince she ‘loved’ since she was seven years old and totally dominated her. The relationship with Clarkson from the beginning is really far from a love story. Maybe he is a prince, he has a family with problems, but Clarkson remains an odious character, more interested in her being submissive than her as a person. And all this is fantastic for Amberly (why?!) and even starts to ‘fight’ for him after that seems to show interest in him.

At the end I even wondered if the poor Amberly was not the victim of a sort of Stockholm syndrome. It is all right not realize that she will never change the future king of Illéa, but get to love someone who treats you like a living doll, no. Amberly, unfortunately, does nothing to prevent the others treat her in that way, rather she blames for what is ‘wrong’ in her.
I was really disappointed by this young Amberly and I reconfirmed my negative opinion about her future husband Clarkson. I do not know what I actually expected from their relationship, probably hoping that he had worsened over time, or that there had been a bit of true love between them. Certainly their relationship is completely different from that of Maxon and America.
The only positive note is the style of the novel that I always find smooth and pleasant, so I decided to add a drop more.
“The Queen” is a novel that adds other new details to the universe created by Kiera Cass, recommended especially to fans of the The Selection series.
