Questo libro aspettava nella mia libreria da troppo, troppo tempo. Me lo aveva consigliato la mia ‘partner in crime’ Anncleire di Please Another Book e, quando ho fatto un ordine cartaceo di libri autografati dall’America, lo avevo preso fidandomi ciecamente del suo consiglio (l’autografo lo trovate qui!). Come al solito mi ha consigliato un libro favoloso!
“These Broken Stars” fa parte di una serie che si concluderà alla fine di quest’anno e che ancora non è stata tradotta in italiano.

It was recommended to me by my ‘partner in crime’ Anncleire of Please Another Book and, when I did an order of autographed books from America, I had taken it blindly trusting of her advice (the autograph is here!). As usual, she recommended me a fabulous book!

Nello spazio profondo qualsiasi cosa può succedere. Può capitare che due persone, completamente diverse, si conoscano, che una enorme nave spaziale venga distrutta in pochi attimi e che nessuno si salvi tranne loro due.
Sulla nave spaziale Icarus Lilac LaRoux sa perfettamente che flirtare con un giovane e affascinante Maggiore metterà la vita di lui a rischio. Vuole essere una persona normale, una ragazza come tante altre a cui è permesso di amare la persona che desidera. E poi è sorpresa dal fatto che lui non la riconosca come la figlia dell’uomo più potente dell’universo.
Tarver Merendsen è diventato un eroe combattendo in prima persona, ma è ancora giovane e non sa muoversi con disinvoltura nel mondo in cui improvvisamente è stato catapultato. Non è fatto per stare tra la ricca popolazione dell’Icarus, lui ama piuttosto la natura, i paesaggi selvaggi che gli ricordano casa. Quando vede la chioma rossa di Lilac però rimane colpito da quella giovane donna che sembra così diversa da tutti coloro che le girano intorno e gli sembra di riconoscerla, anche se non sa chi lei sia.
Inizia in questo modo uno dei romanzi fantascientifici più bello che ho mai letto. Lo avevo anticipato sulla pagina Facebook, ma voglio ribadirlo anche qui, quando un romanzo mi prende così tanto tendo a non essere molto coerente e obiettiva. Mi viene da dirvi di leggerlo e basta, ma tenterò di mettere i miei pensieri su carta e vedremo cosa ne esce fuori.
“These Broken Stars” non racconta solamente la storia di un futuristico Titanic e di due moderni Jack e Rose. Vi sembrerà quasi di vederli nei protagonisti, sì, ma in realtà c’è molto di più. Lilac e Tarver, sebbene molto interessati l’uno all’altra, sono legati dalla necessità di salvarsi dal terribile ‘naufragio’ dell’Icarus. La sopravvivenza e l’amore insieme non fanno che creare una moderna tragedia con risvolti fantascientifici inaspettati.

I due protagonisti mi sono piaciuti davvero molto. Ben tratteggiati, con una voce chiara e riconoscibile, i due POV vengono intervallati da brevi trascrizioni dell’indagine che riguarda gli eventi successivi. L’idea di mettere questi brevi flashforward, che sono strettamente collegati con la narrazione, è stata davvero geniale e mi ha fatto appassionare di più al mistero che nascondevano. Lo stile delle due autrici non è mai noioso o lento e il risultato è un perfetto libro a quattro mani.
Persino la romance è ‘costruita’ in ottimo modo, perché, anche se i due protagonisti rimangono colpiti l’uno dall’altro sin dalla prima volta in cui si vedono, ogni cosa si svolge con il suo tempo. Il rapporto tra Lilac e Tarver è ben bilanciato ed è bello vedere che non sono per niente come sembrano. Lilac non è la ricca ereditiera che tutti immaginano, perché è capace, sveglia e intelligente, ma porta con sé un grosso fardello sulle spalle. Tarver, invece, è un abile soldato, un eroe che nasconde un’anima molto più complessa e che per una volta sarà colui che verrà salvato.
Il world building è forse l’unico punto debole del romanzo. Avrei voluto saperne di più di ciò che accade fuori dall’Icarus o dal pianeta, ma le attenzioni sono tutte concentrate sul luogo in cui si trovano i protagonisti e ciò che viene detto è perfettamente in linea con quello che serve in realtà al lettore. Insomma non ne sono rimasta delusa, però sono molto curiosa di ciò che è stato lasciato fuori e spero che gli altri libri completino il quadro generale dell’universo di Lilac e Tarver.
La parte finale del romanzo è una continua sorpresa. Devo dire che, da brava appassionata di gialli e mistery, avevo tentato di dare una mia interpretazione agli eventi, ma non sono arrivata, neanche lontanamente, ad immaginare ciò che avviene davvero. Inoltre non mi aspettavo di leggere un libro quasi auto-conclusivo, ma in effetti questo lo è. Una delle particolarità di questa serie è proprio di cambiare protagonisti in ogni romanzo. Tengo a precisarlo perché io stessa sono rimasta delusa dalla notizia una volta finito il libro, però potrebbe essere un incentivo per chi non ama i cliffhanger.
Ho l’impressione che questo libro sia uno di quelli che o si ama o si odia. A me è piaciuto così tanto che davvero non riesco a trovargli troppi difetti. Decisamente il libro giusto al momento giusto. 
Tra colpi di scena, fantascienza, amore e terribili minacce di morte, “These Broken Stars” riesce a tenere incollato il lettore fino all’ultima pagina. Consiglio questa space opera a tutti gli amanti della fantascienza.

In deep space anything can happen. It may happen that two people, completely different, know each other, that a huge space ship is destroyed in a few seconds and that no one except the two of them is saved.
On the spaceship Icarus Lilac LaRoux knows that flirting with a young and charming Major puts his life at risk. She wants to be a normal person, a girl like many others that are allowed to love the person they want. And then she is surprised that he did not recognize her as the daughter of the most powerful in the universe.
Tarver Merendsen became a hero fighting on the field, but he is still young and he does not know how to move with ease in the world where he was suddenly catapulted. He is not meant to be among the rich population of Icarus, he loves rather the nature, the wild landscapes that remind him home. When he sees the red hair of Lilac, though, he is impressed by that young woman who seems so different from all those people and he seems to recognize her, even if he does not know who she is.
Starts in this way one of the most beautiful science fiction novels I’ve ever read. I had anticipated on the Facebook page, but I want to repeat it here, when a novel takes me so much I tend not to be very consistent and objective. It makes me to tell you to read it and that’s it, but I will try to put my thoughts on paper and we will see what comes out.
“These Broken Stars” not only tells the story of a futuristic Titanic and two modern Jack and Rose. It will seem to you almost to see them in the protagonists, yes, but in fact there is much more. Lilac and Tarver, although very interested in each other, are bound by the need to escape from the terrible ‘shipwreck’ of Icarus. The survival and love together create a modern tragedy with unexpected sci-fi implications.

I liked very much the two main characters. Well outlined, with clear and recognizable voices, the two POV are interspersed with short transcripts of the investigation regarding the subsequent events. The idea of putting these short flashforward, which are closely related to the narrative, was brilliant and made me more passionate about the mystery that hid. The style of the two authors is never boring or slow and the result is a perfect co-written book.
Even the romance is ‘built’ in a great way, because, even though the two protagonists are struck from each other since the first time they knew, everything takes place with its right time. The relationship between Lilac and Tarver is well balanced and it’s nice to see that they are not at all what they seem. Lilac is not the rich heiress who all imagine, because she is capable, alert and intelligent, but brings a heavy burden on her shoulders. Tarver, however, is an able soldier, a hero who hides a soul much more complex and that for once will be the one to save.
The world building is perhaps the only weak point of the novel. I wanted to know more about what happens outside the Icarus or the planet, but the attentions are focused on where are the protagonists and what is said is perfectly in line with what actually needs the reader. So I’m not disappointed, but I’m very curious about what was left out and I hope that the other books will complete the overall picture of the universe of Lilac and Tarver.
The final part of the novel is a constant surprise. I must say, as a good fan of mystery, I tried to give my own interpretation to the events, but I have not come to imagine what really happens later. Also I did not expect to read a almost stand-alone book, but in fact this is it. One of the peculiarities of this series is to change its protagonists in each novel. I want to clarify because I have been disappointed by the news once I finished the book, though could be an incentive for those who does not love cliffhangers.
My impression is that this book is one of those you either love or hate. I liked it so much that I really can not find in it too many flaws. Definitely the right book at the right time.
Among twists, science fiction, love and terrible death threats, “These Broken Stars” manages to keep the reader glued to the last page. I recommend this space opera to all lovers of science fiction.
